Ghostbusters Afterlife: Trailer, Plot and More
Whilst 2016’s female-led Ghostbusters reboot was fairly enjoyable as a standalone movie, it left a lot of fans longing for a continuation of the original story arc. Now, more than 30 years since the release of Ghostbusters II, we are getting exactly that with Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
Ghostbusters Afterlife Trailer
In December 2019, the trailer for the new Ghostbusters outing dropped online! From the trailer, we can see that a family move into an old farmhouse that was left to them by their grandfather (scroll down for our theory on who this is). The new town literally trembles with supernatural activity. After uncovering the Ecto-1, it looks like a new young team of Ghostbusters break out the neutron packs.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife release date
Although the film was originally intended to drop in the summer of 2020, the outbreak of the Coronavirus has pushed the release back a few months. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is now slated to hit cinemas on November 11 2021.
Will Bill Murray be in Ghostbusters Afterlife?
Yes, Bill Murray will be reprising his role as Peter Venkman. Alongside newcomers to the franchise Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon, the film is set to star most of the original cast! This includes Ernie Hudson, Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Dan Akroyd, and Annie Potts. The film is even directed by Jason Reitman; the son of the original director, Ivan Reitman, whilst his father acts as a producer.
Given his recent partial re-introduction into the limelight, we predict that we might even get a very small cameo from Rick Moranis.
Who is the grandfather in Ghostbusters Afterlife?
In the trailer, we hear Finn Wolfhard’s character say that they’ve had to move into a creepy old farmhouse that their grandfather left them. But who is the grandfather? Well, given that during one point in the trailer, one of the children discovers Spengler’s uniform, and knowing that the surviving 3 Ghostbusters star in the film and are presumably alive, we can deduce that this is the family of Harold Ramis’ character, Spengler.
Will Oscar be in Ghostbusters 3, and is he Peter Venkman’s son?
In 1989’s Ghostbusters II, we were introduced to Dana’s baby boy, Oscar. In that movie, it was suggested that he’s not Peter Venkman’s son. However, Bloody Disgusting have reported that in the upcoming sequel, he might be revealed to be Venkman’s son after all.
Will Oscar himself be in Ghostbusters Afterlife? Well, whilst a lot of fans might have thought Oscar would be taking a lead in this movie, with the trailer revealing Finn Wolfhard’s character, it doesn’t seem to look that way. However, although he’s not in the announced cast, the character may well appear, alongside Dana.
Assuming the same amount of time has passed in the movie’s universe as in our own, Oscar would be in his early thirties now! Oscar was played by the Deutschendorf twins in the movie, and sadly one of the twins, Henry “Hank” Deutschendorf, tragically committed suicide in 2017. Whether his brother Will might reprise the role, we’ll have to see.
Who will the villain in Ghostbusters 3 be?
Whilst we don’t know who the actual villain will be, the town in the new film does have sinister ties to the first movie. In one scene, we see an old mining site named ‘Shandor Mining Co.’ As fans have pointed out, Shandor is the architect of Dana’s apartment building in the first film, who Spengler describes during the jail scene.
A Gozer worshipper, Shandor designed the building as an antenna to enhance spiritual turbulence to help bring about the end of the world. Ray Stantz explained that the building’s girders have cores of pure selenium. It could be, then, that the selenium was mined here. And perhaps Spengler retired here in his later life to investigate.
