Avengers Infinity War: 9 Gauntlet-Snapping Facts About the Film
Dropping in 2018, Avengers: Infinity War was the culmination of a decade of expert storytelling across 18 movies. Filled with action, courage, laughter, and sadness, it delivered beautifully on everything the MCU had been building up towards with regards to Thanos and the infinity stones, and it gave us probably the greatest cliffhanger in cinematic history.
Here are 9 facts about the film…
1) Tom Holland wasn’t trusted with the script
Although he plays one of the main superheroes in the film, Tom Holland wasn’t trusted with the full script for Infinity War. This was due to the fact he’d let too many spoilers slip for his standalone movie Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Similarly, Mark Ruffalo was given a fake script due to the fact that he, too, had dropped a few spoilers about previous films.
2) Why is Gamora?
In the scene where Doctor Strange, Iron Man and Spider-Man come up against the Guardians of the Galaxy, Starlord asks, ‘Where’s Gamora?’ Before Stark replies, ‘I’ll do you one better: who is Gamora?’ Drax’s response – ‘I’ll do you one better: why is gamora?’ – wasn’t in the script and was ad-libbed, but Bautista, who plays Drax, says Chris Pratt gave him the idea.
3) Sir Kenneth Branagh had a vocal role
The distress signal coming from Thor’s ship at the start of the film was actually the voice of a friend of the MCU. It belonged to Sir Kenneth Branagh, who directed the first standalone Thor movie back in 2011.
4) Voldemorte
In the French dubbed version of the film, Tony Stark calls Ebony Maw ‘Voldemorte’ instead of ‘Squidward.’ This is because, in France, Squidward is called ‘Carlo,’ which would have been too common a name for French audiences to relate back to Spongebob.
5) Tobias Funke made an appearance in Avengers Infinity War
The Russo brothers, who directed the film, had also directed many episodes of Arrested Development, and dropped a little easter egg from the show into Infinity War. When you see the collector’s display cases in the background of one scene, you can spy a blued-up Tobias Funke standing in one of them.
It’s not the first time they’ve planted an Arrested Development easter egg into the MCU. They also put the Bluth stair car in the background of the airport battle in Captain America: Civil War.

6) The Black Panther actors brought their war chants into the film
When they were filming the Wakanda battle scene, the Russo brothers hadn’t seen Black Panther (it’s production had wrapped only 2 weeks before Infinity War’s product started) so they didn’t know about the war chant, ‘yibambe,’ that the actors had used in the film. The actors therefore brought it into Infinity War themselves. ‘Yibambe’ means ‘hold strong’ in Xhosa.
7) Space dogs
Rocket calls the outriders ‘space dogs’ at one point. This was added in later on, after a test audience member watched some footage and referred to the outriders as ‘space dogs’ himself. The Russo brothers loved this term, and had it added into the film.
8) The adult in the room
Having a few years to practice the mystic arts since his solo movie, Doctor Strange is one of the most powerful heroes in the MCU by Infinity War, and the Russo brothers wanted him to be the ‘adult in the room.’ This definitely comes across when you see the contrast between him, Stark, Spider-Man, and the Guardians of the Galaxy.
9) Captain America and Thor ad-libbed
When Thor and Captain America reunite on the battlefield in Wakanda, the banter around Captain America copying Thor’s beard is totally ad-libbed. The actors said that the characters had known each other long enough to have some boyish banter.
