Indiana Jones 5: Release Date, Cast, Plot and More
A fifth installment in the Indiana Jones series has been in the pipeline some some time. Although 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull had mixed reviews, Disney confirmed there would be an Indiana Jones 5 back in 2016.
What’s the release date for Indiana Jones 5?
With the global pandemic, the release date for the fifth Indy movie has been pushed back a few times already; moving from 2020 to 2021 and eventually to 22. As it stands, the date Disney is working towards is July 29, 2022.
Who’s directing Indiana Jones 5?
Since it was Steven Spielberg who directed the first four outings of the famous archaeologist, he was originally lined up to direct the new project at Disney. However, due to some creative disagreements, he has since pulled out from the role of director, but will stay on as a producer.
So who will be directing this next chapter in the series, then? Well, the role has been given to James Mangold. You might know him best as the director of 2017’s brutal Wolverine movie, Logan.
Which cast members are returning for Indiana Jones 5?
Only one cast member is confirmed for certain – and you don’t win any prizes for guessing who that is. Harrison Ford said in an interview that nobody else can play Indiana Jones, stating: ‘When I die, he dies.’ So the actor will be back wearing the fedora and cracking the whip for this next adventure at Disney.
Fleabag writer and star Phoebe Waller Bridge is now confirmed to be joining the cast, in the female lead opposite Harrison Ford. She’s an incredibly talented actress, so we’re excited to see who she’ll be playing, and what she’ll bring to this next outing!
Karen Allen, who appeared as Indy’s love interest in the original Raiders of the Lost Ark, before reprising her role in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, seems likely to return for the next chapter; especially as she married Indy at the end of the last movie. However, it’s been reported that Karen Allen wasn’t contacted when the new film was announced.
It’s very unlikely that Shia La Beouff will be returning for this next installment. We were introduced to him as Indy’s hotheaded ‘greaser’ son in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It’s safe to say that fans weren’t too keen on the character, and with various scandals surrounding Shia La Beuoff’s personal life, it doesn’t seem too likely that Disney will welcome him onboard for the project.
Both John Rhys Davies, who played Egyptian digger Sallah in Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, and Jim Broadbent, who played Indy’s friend and boss at the university in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, have expressed an interest in returning for the new movie.
What’s the plot?
No details around the plot have been revealed yet. There are an infinity of supernatural possibilities, myths and ancient relics and religions that the writers and producers can choose from.
One cool idea we’ve seen floating around on the internet is that the film could be based around the search for the fountain of youth. If Indy ended up drinking from it, it could set up a new chain of films using a new and younger actor in the role. However, since Harrison Ford is certain no one else can play the role, we doubt this idea will come into fruition.
Who’s composing the score?
It’s hard to imagine an Indiana Jones movie without musical legend John Williams helming the score. Fortunately, we don’t have to imagine that, as the gifted composer – who crafted the infamous Indiana Jones tune we all know and love – will be returning to provide the score for Indy 5.
