The Batman: Trailer, Villains and More

Warner Bros.

It’s Robert Pattinson’s turn to don the famous cowl! The Dark Knight comes up against a very sinister Riddler in this gritty re-boot of the Batman franchise. Here’s everything we know so far…

Trailer

This teaser trailer, which dropped at the DC Fandome online event, gives a real feeling for just how dark the film will be…

Release Date

Despite Covid delaying the release, film is currently scheduled to hit cinemas on March 4, 2022.

Who is the main villain?

As you can tell from the trailer, The Riddler is going to be the main villain in the film. But he will be far from Jim Carey’s fun and comical Riddler from Batman Forever, who leaves most of the violence to Two-Face. In The Batman, the Riddler – played by Paul Dano – will be a dark and sinister riddle-obsessed serial killer.

But the Riddler isn’t the only iconic Batman villain to feature in the film. Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz) and the Penguin (Colin Farrell) will also make appearances!

When is The Batman set?

Although it’s not clear which calendar year the film will be set, we know that the events take place during Bruce Wayne’s second year fighting crime as the Caped Crusader!

Will there be sequels?

Matt Reeve, the director, has signed up to create a trilogy of these new ‘The Batman’ movies – and they will likely star Robert Pattinson the whole way through. In addition to the two sequel movies, a HBO Max spin-off series is also being planned.

Will Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker appear in The Batman?

It’s been confirmed that the Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix is set in a different universe to Matt Reeve’s new trilogy, so we’re unlikely to see that version of Arthur facing off against Robert Pattison’s Batman. Don’t worry, though, there is talk of Joaquin Phoenix reviving the role in a Joker sequel.

As for the Reeve trilogy, the director has said he does intend to include the Joker later on, but it’ll be played by somebody other than Phoneix – likely an entirely new actor to the role.
